There is one in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common chormosomal condition. There are more than 400,000 people living in the United States with DS. And approximately 6,000 births per year with Down syndrome
The symptoms for Down syndrome can vary from person to person and can range from mild to severe. The head may be smaller than normal and abnormally shaped. For example, the head may be round with a flat area on the back. The inner corner of the eyes may be rounded instead of pointed. A doctor can often make an initial diagnosis of DS at birth based on how the baby looks. The doctor may hear a heart murmur when listening to the baby's chest with a stethoscope.

Some common physical sign of Down syndrome are: Upward slanting eyes, Decreased muscle tone at birth, flattened nose, single crease in the palm of the hand, and separated joints between the bones of the skull which is called sutures.
