The History behind Down Syndrome
In 1862 Dr. John Langon Down first characterized Down syndrome as a distinct form of mental disbility but in 1866 Down syndrome was more widely published. John Down was born on November 18,1828, he studied medicine at the Royal London Hospital. He developed a theory that children with Down syndrome have a common physical characteristics.
More was learned about the syndrome when Professor Jerome Lejeune discovered that people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, the chromosome studies were developed to confirm the diagnosis of Down syndrome. After his research led him to the fact that the cells of people with Down syndrome had 47 chromosomes, but its suppose to be 46 chromosomes for the people with Down syndrome. But later it was discovered that the chromosome number 21 contanined an extra partial that is called "mongoloids", also known as the Trisomy 21. In 1961 a group of prominent geneticists got the name Trisomy 21 changed into Down syndrome which was named after John Langdon Down.
During the 20th century, the United States placed majority of children in a institutions- frequently soon after birth.
